The Telecom Blues

Letter to the Editor:

* In 1994 the entire community of Estes Park, Colorado still had “ Party Lines “ where many people had to wait to make a call until no one else was on the line. Other people on the same line could listen in on other private conversations. The Estes Park Mayor and Town Council along with the Larimer County Commissioners filed a complaint with the Colorado Public Utility Commission as we were getting no where by dealing with US West directly.  The situation was so bad we gave US West the nickname of “ US Worst “….. Look here:

.
* The Colorado PUC responded to our complaint and sent a representative to Estes Park for a public meeting with 300 attendees.  Retired US Army Colonel Louis O” Riordan and Arthur von Boennighausen testified in behalf of the Town of Estes Park.  The Colorado PUC supported our case and issued a directive to US West to immediately begin upgrading the telecommunication system in the Town of Estes Park with a population of about 10,000.  The Colorado PUC enforced their mandate to upgrade the system through a series of $100,000 fines to US West over the course of a year.
.
* Since the Estes Park telecommunication system was so far behind the times they enjoyed a new digital telephone switch and underground fiber optic cable to the curb of most commercial businesses and residential homes.
.
This is the approach I recommend we use with the very poor service from AT&T Wireless in Custer County, Colorado.
